Manal Al Sharif

LINKS ARE AT THE END

As some of you know, Manal Al-Sharif was recently detained by Saudi authorities for breaking the ban on female driving in Saudi Arabia. While I totally respect the religious interpretations of everyone, I have to say I am quite surprised by the reaction to this case. The very interesting thing I have found out is that there are seemingly (that is my impression) more Saudis on Twitter and Facebook and in Comments on News Articles related to the story who are AGAINST Female Driving in the Kingdom. Reasons against women's right to drive varied between "Wanting to treat a woman like a queen instead of the harsh realities of driving", to "this is a plain and simple conspiracy to destroy society", complete character assassinations and absolute indecency in discussing her matter, to "we respect your wishes, Manal, but Islam prohibits that." I did not expect such powerful reaction against the idea. Anyway, the point I wish to make, again as in my previous article on Female Leadership, is that there is a huge difference between believing that this is against Islamic Law and to have a respectful debate over the issue, and the horrible comments that simply view women as weak inferior creatures not worthy of respect. The more commonly believed approach to Feminist issue by mainstream Islamic Scholars has been a version of Complementarism, which establishes that the genders are equal, but should preferably have different roles in society. Islam respects women, as I have been taught all of my life, and I am continuously saddened by this "cultural" view of women in our region. Feel free to disagree religiously, but don't insult women. (Notice: I am not going to post news clippings, because they are MANY. You can find the most relevant ones on the pages below as well as by searching Manal's name on Yahoo/Bing/Google.)

(Notice 2: Manal has just been released on bail after this post was written and saved as a draft)
